Suffolk Art League 2023-2024 Scholarships
Applications are open for the 2023-2024 Suffolk Art League scholarships for students in grades 6-12 in Suffolk. Students who are enrolled in public, private or home school are eligible for scholarships in the arts.
The Suffolk Art League's Sharon Picot and Chip Picot Student Scholarship is available to students who live in or attend school in Suffolk, Virginia. Students must be entering grades 6 through 12 in the 2023-2024 school year to be eligible for the Scholarship.
The recipient(s) of the Scholarship will be named in May 2023. The amount of this year’s scholarship will be up to $5,410.00. A selection committee consisting of three Art League board members, one Art League member-at-large and one member from the community will choose the recipients(s) and this decision will be final.
Applicants may use their scholarships in pursuit of a wide range of creative endeavors, including but not limited to visual, performing and the literary arts. Examples of prior awardees’ areas of interest are painting, photography, sculpture, piano, violin, voice, band, drama, ballet, tap, creative writing, poetry and prose.
The recipients(s) will receive written confirmation of their scholarship award. The scholarship funds will be paid directly to a teacher, vendor or educational institution. All awarded funds must be dispersed by May 12, 2024. Please make sure all receipts are sent to Suffolk Art League’s Education Coordinator prior to this deadline! Any unused funds will revert to the Picot Student Scholarship Fund for 2024 – 2025.
SELECTION OF RECIPIENT:
The selection jury will use the following criteria to evaluate scholarship applicants:
Skill: Student must display skill and a desire to excel in the artistic area of their choice.
Need: Students must demonstrate financial need to pursue their artistic development.
Scholastic Achievement: Student must maintain good academic standing. (Note: All students, public, private and homeschool, are eligible for this scholarship.)

- Obtain and attach a letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor or other mentor. This recommendation can not be from an immediate family member.
- Compose and attach an essay of between 100-300 words stating the applicant’s interest and their goals and intentions for how they will use the scholarship funds. This essay MUST be written by the applicant.

The John R. Taylor, Jr. Memorial Student Scholarship is available to students who live in or attend school in Suffolk.
Students must be entering grades 6 through 12 in the 2023-2024 school year to be eligible for the Scholarship. This is not a college scholarship.
The recipient of the Scholarship will be named in May of 2023. The amount of the Scholarship will be up to $540.00. A selection committee consisting of three Art League board members, one Art League member-at-large and one member from the community will choose the recipients(s) and this decision will be final.
This scholarship is for students interested in pursuing the Visual Arts. The types of activities these funds can be used for include, but are not limited to, workshop and class registration and materials fees, purchase of art materials, tools and equipment, and exhibition of artwork. The recipients will receive written confirmation of the scholarship award. The scholarship funds will be paid directly to a teacher, vendor or other appropriate area of need. All awarded funds must be spent by May 12, 2024. Any unused funds will revert back to the Taylor Student Scholarship Fund.
