Open Call for Artists to Submit Proposals for
Public Mural Project
Festival Park
We are looking to commission an artist to design and create a mural for a public space within the Downtown Suffolk area. The artwork will attract the attention of attendees at the Downtown Festival Park located 215 W. Washington St., Suffolk, VA 23434. This new park invites families to enjoy music, festivals, movies, and a celebration of the arts in the heart of downtown Suffolk.
Festival Park Mural Dimensions:
- Full Mural Space: 140ft. x 20ft. height on ends and middle wall 14ft. height
- Approximately 2,380 sq. ft.
-Wall has recently been prepped and painted.
Size/Medium: The artwork should be large enough to be seen from the road and provide a fun,
colorful backdrop to the festival park.
Theme/Style: The selection committee is open to various themes and styles, but with an
understanding that it reflects Suffolk. A broad color palette is encouraged, however no neon
colors. Please no political, religious, racist, or appropriated copyright images. No sexually
explicit or vulgar images or language.
Calendar:
Phase 1: August 9, 2024 - Letter of Interest Submission deadline (please see below).
August 16 - Selection and notification of artists to submit design proposals.
Phase 2: August 30 Deadline to Submit design proposals
September 13 – Final selection and notification of Artist to create the mural.
Phase 3: Timeline for the creation of the mural will be negotiated with the Artist.
The following will be used in the proposal evaluation process:
- Artistic merit (excellence, originality, creativity, and innovation) as evidenced by
submitted materials.
- Professional artistic experience to fulfill the requirements of this project either in studio,
educational, community, employment, and or art projects and the ability to undertake the
design, creation, and installation of the artwork.
- Appropriateness of materials, style, and concepts in relation to this prospectus.
Proposal Requirements: Submission must be submitted to [email protected] by 11:59pm August 9, 2024
There is no application fee to apply.
1. Statement of Understanding, the artist agrees to comply with all State of Virginia
codes. By submitting your application, you agree to this Statement of Understanding.
2. Letter of Interest, outline your interest in this project and how you will approach the artwork design and creation.
3. Materials list, breakdown of supplies, extra requirements, and estimate of timeline for completion.
4. Cost estimate
5. Resume, max 2 pages outlining your professional accomplishments. If submitting for a team, please include each team member’s resume.
6. Artwork images, a selection of up to 10 images (clearly labeled) representing artworks most relevant to the scope of this opportunity. Please include any sketches you have in mind for this project (optional).
7. References, 3 professional references including name, affiliated organization (if applicable) email address, phone number, and relationship to each reference.
