Kingsboro Guard Rail Beautification Project
Request for Proposal
Kingsboro Guard Rail Beautification Project
Open to Artists in the Greater Hampton Roads Region 18 years or older.
Keep Suffolk Beautiful (KSB) and Suffolk Art League (SAL) are requesting submissions from artists interested in designing and facilitating the painting of a 175’ x 1’ guard rail plus supports and posts. The guard rail is located along Constance Rd. at Katherine St. and Orchard Ave, in downtown Suffolk, 23434
(Photos of guard rail attached)
The work is anticipated to be executed in May/June 2022. The Artist and design will be selected by a jury comprised of members of KSB and SAL in consultation with the City of Suffolk. KSB & SAL will oversee the preparation of the guard rail with removal of loose rust and paint and primed. If the artist desires, the solid side facing Orchard Ave. can also be painted.
The deadline to submit proposals is 5:00 p.m. on April 22, 2022.
The budget for this project is $1,200.00.
Budget includes artist fees for guardrail mural including design work, installation, lodging, and meals.
This budget also includes the purchase of appropriate exterior metal paint, and brushes and any other items deemed necessary by the artist.
Project Description:
As part of Suffolk’s ongoing commitment to cultivating beauty and enriching our community through art, this project is intended to provide a Hampton Roads based artist with a “canvas” that will both welcome visitors to our city and enliven the landscape. The design can be abstract or representational, but should be a good fit for the extended format of this particular surface.
Artwork Goals:
The design will transform the guard rail into an eye-catching feature of the Suffolk Landscape, welcoming visitors to Suffolk and enhancing the natural beauty of our environment. The side facing Orchard Ave. will be painted a solid color while the side facing Constance Road will have the selected design. #KeepSuffolkBeautiful should be included somewhere in the composition.
Eligibility:
Artists over 18 with relevant experience creating and executing public artwork and legally able to work onsite in the United States. Artists may apply in teams (artists applying as a team must split the allotted number of work examples and will split the artist fee).
Application Requirements:
Applications must be submitted to Wayne Jones, Community Outreach Coordinator, at [email protected] no later than 5:00 p.m. on April 22.
