Suffolk Art League Student Scholarships

Applications open at noon on January 12, 2026 for the 2026 - 2027 Suffolk Art League student scholarships!

The Suffolk Art League's Sharon Picot and Chip Picot Student Scholarship and John R. Taylor, Jr. Memorial Student Scholarship are available to students who reside in or attend school (or homeschool) in Suffolk, Virginia. Students must be entering grades 6 through 12 (or homeschool equivalent ages) in the 2026 - 2027 school year to be eligible for the scholarships. Scholarship recipient(s) will be named in May 2026.

​Please note these are not college scholarships.

Sharon Picot and Chip Picot Student Scholarship

The amount of this year’s scholarship will be up to $10,500.00. A selection committee consisting of three Art League board members, one Art League member-at-large, and one member from the community will choose the recipient(s), and this decision will be final.
 
Applicants may use their scholarships to pursue a wide range of creative endeavors, including but not limited to visual, performing, and literary arts. Examples of prior awardees’ areas of interest are painting, photography, sculpture, piano, violin, voice, band, drama, ballet, tap, creative writing, poetry, and prose.
 
The recipient(s) will receive written confirmation of their scholarship award. The scholarship funds will be paid directly to a teacher, vendor, or educational institution, or in the form of reimbursement for approved payments to the aforementioned list. All awarded funds must be dispersed by May 10, 2027. Please make sure all receipts are sent to Suffolk Art League’s Education Coordinator before this deadline!  Any unused funds will revert to the Picot Student Scholarship Fund for 2027 - 2028.
 
CRITERIA FOR JURY SELECTION OF RECIPIENT:
 
Skill: Students must display skill and a desire to excel in the artistic area of their choice.
Need: Students must demonstrate financial need to pursue their artistic development. 
Scholastic Achievement: Students must maintain good academic standing. (Note: All students, public, private, and homeschooled, are eligible for this scholarship.)
 
HOW TO APPLY:
Deadline April 17, 2026

  1. Obtain and attach a letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor, or other mentor. This recommendation cannot be from an immediate family member.
  2. Compose and attach an essay (100 - 300 words) stating the applicant’s interest, goals, and intentions for how they will use the scholarship funds. This essay MUST be written by the applicant. 
  3. Include a clear headshot or school photo.
  4. All attachments must be clearly labeled. Example: JonDoeTeacherRec.pdf, JonDoeEssay.pdf, or JonDoeHeadshot.jpeg
  5. After completing the application via Google Form linked below, email the recommendation letter, essay, and photo to the Education Coordinator, Abby Reed, at [email protected]​
John R. Taylor, Jr. Memorial Student Scholarship

The amount of this year’s scholarship will be up to $600.00. A selection committee consisting of three Art League board members, one Art League member-at-large, and one member from the community will choose the recipient(s), and this decision will be final.
 
This scholarship is for students interested in pursuing the visual arts. The types of activities these funds can be used for include, but are not limited to, workshop and class registration, artwork exhibition fees, purchase of art materials, tools, and equipment.

​The recipient(s) will receive written confirmation of their scholarship award. The scholarship funds will be paid directly to a teacher, vendor, or educational institution, or in the form of reimbursement for approved payments to the aforementioned list. All awarded funds must be dispersed by May 10, 2027. Please make sure all receipts are sent to Suffolk Art League’s Education Coordinator before this deadline!  Any unused funds will revert to the Taylor Student Scholarship Fund for 2027 - 2028.
